You're having an amazing afternoon out riding your motorcycle.
The weather is awesome, and you've got the wind blowing through
your helmeted hair. Nothing could ruin this day.
Nothing except for getting ran off the road by another
driver. Luckily, you weren't injured this time. It's a good thing that you were
wearing your safety gear, or that could have ended up being worse.
There are over a
thousand people every year who don't come out of accidents as well
as you did. Many times it could have been avoided if the rider was practicing
proper motorcycle safety. Keep reading to learn more.
1. Choose the Right Ride
The first rule of motorcyclist safety is to choose the right
ride for you. Many people base their decision on aesthetics alone. To be
honest, that's the last thing you should consider.
You increase your risk of getting into an accident if your
motorcycle is too big for you. You should be able to put your feet flat on the
ground, and all the bike's controls should be easy for you to reach.
2. Wear the Proper Attire
Don't hit the road without putting on the proper motorcycle
safety gear. Jeans and a t-shirt won't protect you from the asphalt if you fall
off your bike.
You need a sturdy motorcycle jacket and pants. Full coverage
helmets are a must and don't forget about protecting
the hands with a nice pair of gloves.
We understand that all of this gets a little hot in the
middle of the summer, but it's still necessary to wear it. It won't be as bad
if you opt for fabrics that wick away moisture from the body.
3. Let Yourself Be Seen
Many accidents happen because the other people on the road
couldn't see the motorcyclist. Black and brown gear isn't exactly easy to spot,
and you're not as large as a car.
The good news is that it's easy to make yourself seen. All
you need is a little reflective tape, and you'll be good to go!
4. Two Is a Crowd
Having another person ride on the motorcycle with you can be
fun and intimate, but if you're a beginner rider, it might not be a good idea
to allow for passengers. Let yourself get a little more comfortable with
controlling the bike first.
If you have been riding for a while and want to have a
passenger, that's fine. You do want to make sure that they are aware of what
riding on a bike with another person means. They'll need to do their part to
ensure that you both stay safe.
Motorcycle Safety Tips That Will Keep You Protected
There's nothing more freeing than spending an afternoon
cruising on your bike. A leisurely ride can turn south if you don't follow the
proper motorcycle safety guidelines.
Always wear the proper gear, follow road laws, and don't
allow for another passenger until you feel comfortable with it. Do this, and
you'll be fine.
